In this lively, hands-on experience your group will be divided into teams to compete in creating the most delicious cocktail. Each team will start with a chosen cocktail formula, then select from an open bar of ingredients to craft their drink. Teams will have up to three attempts to refine and perfect their cocktail before presenting it to the group. The winning cocktail will be prepared as samples for everyone to taste.

I started playing mahjong in 2020 when my friends Kristin, Brannon, and Louisa very patiently taught me. We play the American style that was standardized in 1937 by the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) in New York. At first, I found mahjong overwhelming but the more I played, the more it all began to click into place for me and make sense. As I myself was learning I couldn’t help but notice how much interest there was in the game. Historically it’s been a game passed down generation to generation. We don’t really see that as much now. I saw an opportunity to share this game with others and get them going. In November of 2023, I taught my first lesson to four players at my dining table. The month after that, in December 2023, I led a class of 20 people, which was really wild. During my first year of business, I’ve taught about 350 people and presented a lecture on mahjong at UT. So it all came together pretty quickly and it hasn’t slowed down yet.

If you can play American Mah Jongg alone with the current NMJL card—knowing the rules, building hands, making exposures, and keeping up with a table—you’re ready. You don’t need to be an expert or a tournament player. Our league-style format adds friendly competition, not pressure. Tables will be grouped by experience, and scoring and schedule will be explained before play. If you’re still learning basics or need regular coaching to finish a game, this retreat may not be right for you, but please join a future instructional event.

Yes — just indicate it on the registration form when asked, and a $100 discount will be applied after a retreat host reaches out.

Yes. We recommend taking the day before the mahjong experiences to become familiar with the venue and to map out your itinerary of free services, rather than arriving on the same day as most participants.

No need to stay overnight—you can use our day rate. Staying overnight gives you access to the resort for 2 days and 1 night.

Yes — You can enjoy all of Miraval’s included classes. On the day of the mahjong sessions, you’ll have about four hours of free time, and the following day you’ll have the resort to enjoy until 4 PM.”
